Custom Kydex Taurus GX2 Holsters

The name reads like a step below the GX4. It is not. Taurus lists the GX2 at 3.38 inches of barrel against the GX4’s 3.06, 6.19 inches overall against 6.05, and 4.89 inches tall against roughly four and a half. The cheaper, newer gun with the lower number is the bigger one.

That matters because a shell pressed for a GX4 is the first thing people reach for. It will not hold this pistol, and the gap is large enough to feel immediately.

Taurus now sells four pistols with GX in the name and they are not a size ladder. The GX2 arrived in January 2025 as the value carry gun; the three GX4 variants came earlier and run smaller through the frame. Only one of these lines fits your pistol.

Quickest way to tell a GX2 from a GX4 in the hand: look for the manual safety lever on the frame above the trigger, and count thirteen in the flush magazine. If the front strap has interchangeable backstraps fitted, you are holding a GX4 — the GX2 uses a fixed grip.

No Optic Cut, but There Is a Lever

This page inverts the usual order. Taurus lists the GX2 as not optics ready, so there is no sight channel question to answer — but there is a manual safety on the frame, and a lever sitting above the trigger is squarely in the path of a closing shell. It gets relieved rather than pressed against. The short dust cover rail takes compact bodies:

  • Streamlight TLR-7 and TLR-7A on the short rail

All three sit within about a quarter-inch of each other on barrel length, and none of them share a shell. That is the Taurus lesson in one line. The GX2 is the middle of the three in length and the flattest in the hand; the GX4 is the one to take if pocketability is the point; the G3c is the tallest and holds the most gun. Order to the exact model — the numbers are too close for a near-enough shell to work.

The GX2 landed in January 2025, which means most of the shells sold for it were designed before anyone had one to measure. What a dedicated pattern gives you:

  • A shell taken off the actual pistol rather than scaled from a GX4 buck and opened up until a GX2 would go in.
  • Relief cut for the manual safety where it sits, so the lever is never what the Kydex is bearing against.
  • Retention off the trigger guard on a gun that is genuinely light, where too much grip makes the draw harder than the pistol deserves.

No, and the mistake is understandable given the names. Taurus lists the GX2 at a 3.38 inch barrel, 6.19 inches overall and 4.89 inches tall; the GX4 runs 3.06 inches of barrel at roughly 6.05 overall and about half an inch shorter through the grip. The GX2 is the larger pistol despite the lower number, so it will not seat in a GX4 shell. Order the GX2 line specifically.
Taurus publishes it as not optics ready, so there is no factory cut and no plate system on the standard gun. If yours wears a red dot, somebody has machined the slide after the fact. No two of those jobs match: the recess depth varies, the screw pattern varies, and the finished height of the glass varies with it. Photograph the gun with the sight mounted and the channel gets cut around your slide instead of around an assumption.
It changes how we press it, yes. The GX2 carries a manual thumb lever on the frame in addition to the trigger safety, and it sits above the trigger, right where a shell closes around the frame. We cut relief for it so the Kydex never bears on the lever, which matters both for retention consistency and for making sure the safety is not being nudged as you reholster. It does not change how the pistol seats or how it draws.
It does. There is a short rail under the dust cover, and the compact bodies are the sensible match — a Streamlight TLR-7 or TLR-7A, the TLR-6 if you want a laser bundled in, or an Olight from the Mini range. Anything full-size hangs off the end of a frame this short and unbalances the gun. Put whichever unit you run in the order notes, since the Kydex is heat-formed over gun and light as one assembly.
It suits it well. At just over nineteen ounces unloaded with a 3.38 inch barrel, there is not much muzzle to press into your thigh when you sit down, and the flat profile keeps it from pushing a shirt out at the waist. A claw to roll the grip inward is worth adding, since 4.89 inches of height is enough for the grip to be the part that shows if you let it.
The Triton 2.0 at $60 is where we point most people, because being able to dial retention and ride height matters while you are still deciding how you like to carry — and plenty of GX2 buyers are new to this. Choose the Proteus instead, same money, if the pistol spends part of its day in a bag rather than on your belt. Add the $25 pouch either way.
Yes, priced identically, and built on a true mirror of the mold instead of a right-handed shell wearing relocated hardware. On this pistol that distinction earns its keep: the safety lever lives on one side, so its relief cut has to flip along with everything else. Choose Left under Hand and it comes off the correct buck.
