Custom Kydex Glock 30 Holsters

There are two pistols wearing this number and they are not the same width. The Glock 30 carries the standard double-stack .45 slide. The 30S carries the slimmer one from the Glock 36, bolted to the same frame — a factory combination rather than something an owner did.

That fork sits in the single dimension a Kydex shell has no way to absorb. Which is why the order form asks for a letter as well as a number.

The Letter Is Not Decoration

Glock has form for using a suffix to mean something small. On the 30 it means something large. The S denotes a slide swap done at the factory: the frame of a 30 married to the narrower slide from the single-stack 36, producing a pistol that is easier to carry and impossible to fit in the wrong shell.

The quickest check is to stand the pistol on its muzzle and look down at the slide against the frame. On a 30 the slide is flush with the frame rails; on a 30S it is visibly narrower than the frame beneath it. Once you have seen it you cannot unsee it.

The last row is a useful illustration of why width alone never settles a fit. A Glock 30 and a Glock 21 are within a hundredth of an inch across the slide and share a cartridge, and they still need separate shells, because a holster indexes at both ends of the pistol rather than just around its middle.

Both the 30 and the 30S carry an accessory rail, but there is less dust cover in front of the trigger guard than on a full-size pistol, so the sensible light list is shorter than the Glock 21’s:

  • Streamlight TLR-7 and TLR-7A, the natural pairing for a compact frame
  • Streamlight TLR-1 HL where the pistol is worn outside the belt rather than concealed
  • SureFire X300U-A, which fits but pushes the balance forward noticeably
  • Olight PL-Mini and Baldr Mini for the lowest profile

Red dots. MOS versions use the plate system, so height above the slide depends on the plate and housing together — tell us both. If the slide has been milled aftermarket rather than cut at the factory, send a photo from the side, because an independent cut sits wherever the gunsmith chose.

Worth repeating on this pistol: the sight channel is cut into whichever of the two slide widths you actually own, so the optic and the slide variant have to be named together.

The 30 sits closer to the full-size 21 than to the 30S it shares a number with. That is the whole oddity of this model. Capacity, frame and cartridge group the two subcompacts together, and the one measurement a holster is built around groups them apart. If you take one thing from this page, take the habit of saying the letter out loud when you order.

It would be simpler and cheaper to press one Glock 30 shell and let the 30S owners take their chances. We hold both because the difference is not a tolerance:

  • Separate bucks for the 1.27 and 1.13 inch slides, so neither pistol is carried in a shell formed on the other.
  • Retention drawn from the trigger guard and frame, which the two variants genuinely share, rather than from clamping the slide.
  • The sight channel cut into the correct slide width, since an optic on a 30S sits on a narrower platform than the same optic on a 30.

The slide. Glock built the 30S by fitting the narrower slide from the single-stack Glock 36 onto the Glock 30 frame, which drops the width from about 1.27 inches to about 1.13 inches while leaving the grip, trigger guard and rail unchanged. It is a factory combination rather than a modification. For a holster it is the difference that matters most, because a shell is formed around the slide and cannot take up fourteen thousandths of slack.
No, in either direction. A 30S dropped into a shell pressed for a 30 sits loose, never reaches its retention point and moves under a shirt. A 30 will not enter a 30S shell at all, which is at least an honest failure. We press the two as separate patterns and would rather ask you the question at checkout than have you discover the answer on a belt. Stand the pistol on its muzzle and look at the slide against the frame if you are unsure.
Yes, and it changes nothing about the holster. A 13-round Glock 21 magazine seats fully in a 30 and protrudes below the frame, giving you more grip and more rounds. Everything the shell touches — the slide, the trigger guard, the front of the frame — sits well above that. Carry whichever magazine you prefer. The only thing to specify is the magazine pouch, where the body length genuinely decides how the carrier grips.
Considerably, and it is almost entirely down to length rather than width. The two are within a hundredth of an inch of each other across the slide, so they feel similarly thick, but the 30 is around an inch shorter overall and that is what stops the muzzle pressing into your leg when you sit. If width is what bothers you rather than length, the 30S with its slimmer slide is the version worth handling.
Yes, both carry an accessory rail. There is less dust cover ahead of the trigger guard than on a full-size Glock, so compact bodies such as a Streamlight TLR-7 sit better than a full duty light, though a TLR-1 HL works if the pistol lives outside the belt. Yes, on both variants, and the slide width has to be named alongside the optic. The same sight sits on a wider platform on a 30 than it does on a 30S, so the sight channel is not interchangeable even when the dot is identical. For MOS pistols tell us the plate as well as the housing. For an aftermarket milled slide, send a photograph from the side so we can see where the cut actually sits.
Yes. Same price, reversed buck. Pick Left in the Hand field and name the slide variant in the same breath, since the two widths are cut on different molds and both exist in left and right. If a light is fitted, say which, because the switch ends up on the opposite face of a flipped shell.
