People size up a full-size Glock by looking at the barrel. On the 21 that is the wrong measurement. This is the widest pistol Glock sells — the slide runs a quarter of an inch fatter than the 9mm guns, and the grip has to wrap a double column of .45 ACP.

Gen 4, Gen 5 and the Backstrap Question

Two generations of Glock 21 come through here and the differences are more about the hand than the shell — grip texture, the magazine catch, the removal of finger grooves on the Gen 5. We still press them separately, because the frame ahead of the trigger guard is not identical and this pistol has enough bulk that small profile changes have somewhere to show up.

If you are unsure of the generation, look for finger grooves on the front strap. Gen 4 has them, Gen 5 does not. That single check answers it on a Glock 21 without needing serial numbers or paperwork.

The first row is the one worth internalising. A Glock 17 and a Glock 21 look like the same pistol in photographs and are not remotely the same object in the hand — Glock built the .45 around a cartridge that needed more room in every direction. Anything sold as fitting both is fitting neither properly.

The Glock 21 carries a proper accessory rail and a dust cover with room underneath it, which makes this one of the easier pistols in the catalogue to hang a duty light on. Everything conventional fits:

Compare the 21 to the 30, not to the 17. Both .45s measure almost identically across the slide, which tells you the cartridge dictates girth while the frame size dictates the rest. The Glock 17 is the same length class as the 21 and a completely different pistol to carry, because a quarter of an inch of width does more to your silhouette than an inch of barrel ever will.

Glock 21 Holster Questions

No, and it is not close. The two pistols occupy a similar length class, which is why the question is asked so often, but the Glock 21 slide runs 1.28 inches across against 1.00 inch on the 17. That is a quarter of an inch of width the shell simply does not have. A .45 will not enter a 9mm shell, and if it were forced it would sit on the top edges rather than on the retention point. The 21 has always been its own pattern here.
Plenty of people do, and we build for it, but we would rather set expectations than sell you an easy answer. The difficulty is width rather than length: 1.28 inches across the slide and a grip wrapped around a double column of .45 pushes the pistol away from your body in a way a 9mm does not. Outside the waistband under a jacket it carries comfortably. Inside the waistband it is workable with the right cover garment and a willingness to think about how you sit.
No. The interchangeable backstraps on the Gen 4 and Gen 5 add circumference at the rear of the grip, behind and below every surface a waistband shell touches. Fit the one that suits your trigger reach and order the holster on the generation alone. The only place it would matter is a full-wrap competition rig, which is not what these patterns are.
Enough that we press them separately. The slide and barrel stay consistent between Gen 4 and Gen 5, but the frame profile was revised and the finger grooves disappeared, and this pistol has enough surface area for those changes to show up in how a shell sits. Check the front strap: grooves mean Gen 4, a smooth strap means Gen 5. Put it in your order notes and the shell is pressed on the right buck.
Yes, and this is one of the better platforms for it. The full-length rail and the room under the dust cover take duty bodies properly — a Streamlight TLR-1 HL or a SureFire X300U sit where they should rather than hanging off the end of a short rail. For concealed carry a TLR-7 keeps the profile down. Name the unit at checkout either way, since the mold has to enclose gun and light together as one solid.
Yes. The MOS slides mount the sight on a plate, so the height above the slide is a product of the plate and the housing together. Give us the pair and the channel is milled to match that combined height. A generic channel cut wide enough to clear any combination would lift the top edge of the shell off the slide, and on a pistol this heavy that edge is doing real work.
Yes, and it costs no more than a right-hand build. The shell comes off a reversed buck rather than being a right-hand one with the belt hardware swapped over, which matters on a pistol this heavy because the load path through that hardware is not symmetrical.
