Custom Kydex Glock 48 Holsters

Line a 48 up against a Glock 19 and the outline is almost the same — same overall length, same grip height, and the 48 actually runs the longer barrel of the two. What it gives up is width and five rounds. What it gains is a pistol that stops jabbing you.

Because it sits in that gap, a 48 borrows nothing from either neighbour. We cut the 48 and the 48 MOS as separate patterns and share tooling with neither the 19 nor the 43X.

Glock 48 or Glock 48 MOS?

Glock added two things when it introduced the MOS version of this pistol: an optic cut on top and a short accessory rail underneath. Only one of those matters to a holster, and it is not the one on top.

Not sure which you bought? Ignore the top of the slide and look underneath, forward of the trigger guard. A stepped notch there is the MOS rail; a smooth unbroken curve is the standard gun. Send us a picture if the light is bad and you would rather be certain.

This is the trap with the slimline pair. The 48 and the 43X are built on the same frame, so magazines, grip accessories and mag carriers interchange freely — which leads people to assume the holsters do too. They do not, because the slide is where a shell takes its grip.

Rule of thumb across the whole slimline family: if the change is below the trigger guard it is probably a magazine question, and if it is above the trigger guard it is definitely a holster question.

The MOS Rail, and Why the 48 Handles a Light Better

Same rule as the rest of the slimline family: the standard 48 has no rail, and only the MOS version gained one. Where the 48 pulls ahead is what happens once a light is on it. There is more slide forward of that short rail than on any other slimline Glock, so the light tucks into the profile instead of hanging off the front of it:

  • Streamlight TLR-7 Sub — order the sub-model made for the short slimline rail
  • Streamlight TLR-8 Sub where you want a laser in the same body
  • Olight Baldr Mini and the PL Mini series
  • No full-size bodies. Those want the long dust cover a Glock 17 or 19 gives them

Optics. An MOS slide takes a micro dot directly, and our slimline sight channel is cut deep enough to clear a shielded one. If you had a standard slide milled by a third party, tell us which optic went on it — the cut itself does not change the shell, but the mounting height can change how deep the channel needs to run.

Everyone compares the 48 to the 43X. The more useful comparison is the 19, because on paper these two are nearly the same size — and the places they differ are not the ones people expect.

Identical footprint, longer barrel, five fewer rounds and an eighth of an inch less to dig into your side. If the 19 already conceals fine for you, there is no reason to move. If it does not, the 48 gets you the same sight radius and the same grip in a package that hides better. Long and Thin Is the Hardest Shape to Hold

A 48 puts more leverage on a holster than a compact does, because the mass sits further from the mounting point while the slide gives you less surface to grip. That combination is where cheap shells give up:

  • Retention indexed on the trigger guard rather than on slide friction, since a thin slide simply cannot be squeezed hard enough to hold reliably.
  • A shell that runs the full length of the slide, so the muzzle is supported instead of levering against the mouth every time you sit down.
  • Mounting spread matched to the length, which is what stops a long pistol rocking outward and printing at the grip.

Glock 48 Holster Questions

No. The two pistols share a frame, which is why magazines and grip accessories swap between them freely, but the 48 slide is around three quarters of an inch longer. A shell cut for the 43X bottoms out before the 48 is fully seated, so it never reaches the retention point and sits proud of the mouth. Order the Glock 48 pattern — it is a separate line in our selector.
Externally, remarkably close. Both measure 7.28 inches overall with a 5.04 inch grip height, and the 48 actually has the longer barrel at 4.17 inches against 4.02. The differences are thickness and capacity: the 48 slide is 0.87 inches against the 19 at an inch, and it holds ten rounds rather than fifteen. They do not share a holster, because that eighth of an inch of slide is exactly what the Kydex closes around.
Yes, and the reason is underneath rather than on top. The MOS version added an optic cut and a short accessory rail, and it is the rail that matters — it sits directly where the shell wraps the frame forward of the trigger guard. The optic cut alone would not require a new pattern. Both variants are separate lines at checkout, so pick the one you own.
Only if yours is the MOS. A standard 48 presents an unbroken dust cover with nothing for a light to clamp onto. The MOS carries a short rail that accepts sub-compact bodies — the Streamlight sub-models, the Olight Baldr Mini and similar — while anything sized for a full-size dust cover is out. What the 48 does better than any other slimline is balance one, because a good half inch of slide still projects beyond the light.
They do. A shared frame means a shared magazine well, and fifteen rounds in something this thin is the main reason people fit them. Your holster is indifferent either way, because nothing about a magazine loaded into the pistol reaches the Kydex. The spare carrier is the exception — steel S15 bodies measure differently to factory polymer, so name the one you carry when you order a pouch and we press for it.
Better than most people expect. The instinct is that a longer slide is worse appendix, but the opposite tends to happen — the extra length gives the wedge something to lever against, which rotates the grip into your body rather than letting it push the shirt out. Combined with a slide under nine tenths of an inch wide, a properly built 48 rig often conceals flatter than a shorter but fatter compact.
Buy the MOS unless you are certain you will never want either an optic or a light, because those are the two things it adds and neither can be retrofitted without milling. From our side the choice is neutral — both are tooled, both cost the same to press, and the shells differ only where the rail sits. The one thing worth avoiding is buying the standard gun and adding a rail adapter later, since that changes the shape and means a second holster.
The Proteus Series inside-the-waistband shell is $60, the Nestor is $75 and the Theseus with both mounting kits is $85. Simpler builds for this pistol start at $50. Cutting and pressing happens after your order lands, which puts most builds ten to fourteen business days out. Anything requiring a mold we have yet to make runs beyond that, since the mold itself gets built and proven before pressing — a 48 MOS wearing a sub-compact light is not a combination anybody stocks ready-made.
