We press the Gen 4 and Gen 5 as separate patterns and build them into everything from a single-clip inside-the-waistband shell to a Level 2 duty rig on a quick-detach mount.

What Shares a Glock 17 Shell?

The full-size Glock family splits by chambering more than by shape, so several pistols drop straight into a 17 pattern while a couple of near-identical-looking ones do not.

A 17 will carry any light in our catalogue without complaint. That is not true of most pistols we build for, and it changes the calculation — with a full-size rail and a long dust cover you can pick the light you actually want rather than the one that happens to fit.

Optics. The sight channel on our full-size shells clears a slide-mounted dot, and on a 17 there is enough slide length that even a large window optic sits well inside the holster mouth. Suppressor-height irons are the one thing to declare when you order, because a taller front post wants a deeper channel cut.

The oldest argument in the Glock world, and for holster purposes it comes down to two thirds of an inch of slide and half an inch of grip.

The slide is not what gives a 17 away — the grip is. That extra half inch of frame is what prints under a shirt, which is why the 19 wins for concealment despite the two being much closer in size than people assume. Carrying concealed most days? Look at the Glock 19. Wearing it openly, shooting it often, or keeping it by the bed? The 17 is the better gun and this is the better page.

A concealment holster that loosens is an annoyance. A duty holster that loosens is a problem, because the pistol is visible and the failure modes are worse. What we build differently for full-size carry:

  • Retention that is mechanical rather than frictional, so it does not fade as the shell wears in over a few hundred draws.
  • Mounting hardware rated for the weight of a loaded full-size pistol plus a light, which is roughly double what a slimline asks of it.
  • Quick-detach options that let one moulded shell move between belt, leg and carrier instead of buying three holsters.

Glock 17 Holster Questions

Plenty of people do, and the slide is not the obstacle — it disappears down your leg line. The grip is what prints, because it sits above the belt and pushes a cover garment out at the exact point people look. A wedge under the muzzle, a claw pulling the butt inward, and a belt rigid enough to carry the weight will get you most of the way there. If you are fighting it daily, the shorter grip of a 19 solves it properly.
It will. The 22 is the same full-size pistol chambered in .40 S&W, with matching frame and slide dimensions, so the shell shape is identical. The 31 in .357 SIG is the same story. Choose the Glock 22 line if you own one so we match your generation, and select the 17 with a note if you carry the 31, which has no separate entry.
Not as a standing line yet. Our configurator tools the Gen 4 and Gen 5 for this pistol, and while the Glock 19 Gen 6 does have its own pattern, the 17 Gen 6 does not. Get in touch before ordering and we will tell you where it stands — new patterns are a mould rather than a production run for us, so it is a conversation worth having.
Level 2 means the pistol is held by an active mechanism you release deliberately, on top of the passive grip the moulded shell already provides. If you carry openly — duty, security, uniformed work — it is worth having, because a visible pistol is one somebody else can reach for. For concealed carry under a shirt it is usually unnecessary complication, and passive retention off the trigger guard is enough.
They are quick-detach interfaces that sit between the holster and whatever it is attached to. Fit the receiver to a belt hanger, a drop leg and a plate carrier, then move a single moulded shell between all three in a second or two without unthreading a belt or re-adjusting the ride. Our Veritas Series is built around them, and they suit a 17 more than most because full-size guns get worn in more configurations.
A full-size rail means the choice is genuinely open, which is unusual. The X300U-A and X300U-B are the duty default for good reason; the Streamlight TLR-1 HL-X gives more output for the money; the Modlite PL350 throws further than either if you want reach. All are pressed into the shell as part of the shape, so pick the light first and tell us at the time of order rather than adding one later.
Outside the waistband, for most owners of this pistol. A full-size gun inside your belt takes up real estate you notice when you sit, drive or bend, and the draw is slower because the grip is buried. Outside carry with a decent cover garment is faster and far more comfortable, and it is how the vast majority of our 17 shells go out. Inside carry works, but it is the harder road on this size of pistol.
The Veritas OWB on a QLS or RTI mount is $75, the Ares Series Level 2 is $125 and the Zeus Level 2 duty rig is $130. Simple inside-the-waistband shells for the same pistol start at $50. All are cut and pressed to order on a ten to fourteen business day window, since a duty rig in your generation with your light is not something that sits pre-made on a shelf. Where a fresh mold is required, that estimate no longer applies — molds are built, fitted and proven first.
