Custom Kydex Kimber Micro 9 Holsters

Almost every pistol we press for is striker-fired and carried with nothing to switch off. The Micro 9 is not. It is a single action, it rides with the hammer back, and a small steel lever on the frame is the only thing standing between that hammer and the firing pin.

Which means a holster for this pistol has one job the others do not: it must never be able to move that lever. Not on the draw, not on the way back in, not while you are sitting on it.

Micro 9, or the Smaller One?

Kimber sells two pistols whose names differ by a single character, and they are not the same size in any dimension. The Micro 9 is built around the 9mm cartridge; the plain Micro is the .380, and it is smaller everywhere it matters to a shell. Nearly every mistaken order on this pattern starts with someone saying “Kimber Micro” and meaning one of the two.

On most pistols we discuss cross-fit in terms of dimensions. Here the dimensions are simple and the mechanism is not, so this table is mostly about what happens to that lever.

That first row is the reason this page exists. A shell that clamps down over the safety lever will eventually wipe it to Fire while the pistol is in your waistband, and you will not feel it happen. The relief we cut is not decoration — it is the difference between carrying a single action safely and carrying one hopefully.

No Rail, and What That Means

The Micro 9 has no accessory rail and there is nowhere on this frame that a light could reasonably live. That is not an omission — it is what the pistol is for. So this section is about sights rather than lights:

  • Factory three-dot sights, cleared by the standard channel
  • Tritium night sights, which usually sit taller at the front and get a deeper cut
  • Fibre optic front sights, where the cut protects the rod rather than rubbing on it
  • No rail-mounted lights or lasers — there is no rail to mount them to

Red dots. The standard Micro 9 slide is not optic cut. If yours has been milled by a gunsmith, tell us the footprint and the sight, because an aftermarket cut sits at whatever height the smith chose rather than at a published one. We would rather see a photo than press to an assumption on a slide this narrow.

Everything else on this pistol is pleasingly free of variables, which is unusual and worth enjoying.

They are not one pistol in two calibres. Kimber built the 9mm around a cartridge that needs more room, and the frame and slide grew to suit. A Micro 9 shell holds a .380 Micro loosely enough that it moves under the shirt, which is the failure that ends with a pistol somewhere you did not put it. We press the 9mm and would rather turn the .380 away than sell you a shell that nearly works.

Most Kydex is designed around striker-fired pistols with no external controls to worry about. A cocked and locked carry gun asks for something different, and this is what we do about it:

  • The thumb safety is relieved on the carry side, so no part of the shell rests against the lever while the pistol is holstered.
  • Retention taken from the trigger guard and the front of the frame, never from squeezing the sides of the slide where the safety sits.
  • A mouth that holds its shape, because reholstering a hammer-back pistol is not a thing to do while wrestling a collapsing shell.

Yes, and it is how the pistol is designed to be carried, but the shell has to be cut for it. The risk with a single action in Kydex is not the trigger, which is fully covered — it is the thumb safety, because a shell that presses against that lever can work it down to Fire over hours of movement without you noticing. Every Micro 9 shell we press is relieved around the safety so nothing touches it. Tell us your carry hand and the relief goes on the correct side.
No. They share a name and a design language, and that is where it stops. The 9mm is the larger pistol in every direction, because the cartridge required it. A Micro 9 shell will accept a .380 Micro physically but will not hold it — the pistol sits loose, finds no retention point and moves around under a shirt. We press the Micro 9 and do not currently offer a .380 Micro pattern.
No. The extended baseplate adds length below the frame, and every holster we build for this pistol wraps the slide and the trigger guard well above that. Carry the flush magazine, the extended one, or a different one each day if you like. The only thing to tell us about is the magazine pouch, where the baseplate genuinely does change how the carrier grips.
Not in any way we would recommend. There is no accessory rail on this frame and nothing to attach a light to without modifying the pistol. That is a deliberate part of what the Micro 9 is — a small, light, flat gun for carrying rather than a platform to hang equipment from. If you want a light on a pocket-sized 9mm, we are better off talking about a different pistol than about a different holster.
Only the sight channel, not the mold. Tritium front sights usually sit a little taller than the factory three-dot they replace, so the channel is cut deeper to clear the housing without the shell riding on it. Tell us which sights are fitted when you order. If they were installed by a gunsmith rather than the factory, a photo of the slide from the side is worth sending.
Usually fine, occasionally not, so mention them. The panels sit on the sides of the frame below where most of our shells make contact, and thin factory-profile replacements change nothing. Thicker target-style panels can widen the frame enough to matter on an inside-the-waistband build where the shell hugs the frame closely. If you have fitted something substantial, say what it is and we will tell you honestly whether it changes anything.
Yes, and on this pistol the hand is not a cosmetic preference. The safety relief has to fall on the face your firing thumb actually reaches, so a reversed shell is genuinely reversed rather than a right-hand one wearing relocated hardware. A Micro 9 build is $60, and a slim magazine carrier is $25. Nothing is pre-made; the shell is formed after your order arrives and the bench runs ten to fourteen business days. Naming your sights and your carry hand up front is what keeps it inside that window.
