Reflex or Reflex XL?

Two lines, and unusually for a micro they are easy to tell apart once you have a magazine in hand. Count the rounds it holds and the answer follows immediately.

Both are hammer-fired with much the same trigger, so the feel will not separate them for you — the magazine will. If yours came with a mixed pair, go by the shorter of the two, since that is the flush-fit one for your frame. Send a photo if you would rather we confirmed it.

This is the section that saves the most returns. The Reflex competes directly with a handful of very popular pistols, and buyers reasonably assume that guns sold against each other measure alike. Here is where that breaks down.

Being sold against a pistol and being shaped like it are unrelated. On micro-compacts the shell contacts a very small area, so a near-match has nowhere to hide.

Short Rail, So the Light List Gets Short Too

A micro frame gives a light very little to bolt to, and anything overhanging the muzzle undoes the concealment the slim slide bought you. Stay compact. Of the fifty-three lights and lasers we mold for, only the compact bodies really belong on this pistol:

  • Streamlight TLR-7 Sub, the body sized specifically for pistols in this class
  • Streamlight TLR-6, which clamps rather than needing rail length to work with
  • Streamlight TLR-8 Sub where a laser matters as much as the light does
  • Olight PL Mini 2 or Baldr Mini, if a shorter body suits your carry position better

Optics. The MRD versions arrive already milled for a micro red dot, and we open the top of the shell far enough for a shielded housing to pass through cleanly. Neither of the two lines changes because of it. Tall irons remain the separate question — if yours rise above the optic so you can co-witness, that cut has to go deeper still.

The action is the constant, the dimensions are not. Both lines share the hammer-fired design that makes the Reflex unusual, and that is exactly why neither can borrow a shell from a striker-fired rival — but they cannot borrow from each other either, because half an inch of slide and a taller grip move both ends of the shell. Why Neptune

A Category Is Not a Measurement

Micro-compacts get grouped together by price, capacity and marketing, and almost never by shape. That grouping is how people end up buying a shell built for a different pistol entirely. Three things that follow from taking the shape seriously:

  • The Reflex is pressed on its own buck rather than sorted into a generic micro pattern, because sharing a segment with a gun is not the same as sharing an outline with it.
  • Both lines are held apart, so the XL is never asked to sit in a shell that stops half an inch short of its muzzle.
  • Retention is taken against the actual slide profile, which on a narrow hammer-fired pistol sits differently from the striker guns the class is built around.

FN Reflex Holster Questions

No, and this is the question we field most often about this pistol. Those guns are marketed against each other, which makes people assume they measure alike, but they are three separate designs with three separate slide profiles. The Reflex is also hammer-fired where the others are striker-fired, which changes the internal layout and with it the external shape. On a pistol this small the shell contacts very little surface area, so a near-match shows up immediately as movement.
Indirectly, quite a lot. The mechanism itself is inside the gun and no shell touches it, but the decision to use a hammer is what let FN keep the slide narrow and the bore low rather than building around a striker channel. The result is a pistol with proportions that do not line up with the striker micros it competes with. So the answer matters not because of the hammer itself but because of the shape it produced.
No. The XL runs a 3.8 inch barrel against the standard gun’s 3.3, and FN extended the grip to match, so it grew at both ends of the shell at once. It overruns the front of a standard Reflex holster and sits proud at the rear. The two are separate lines in our selector for that reason. If you are not certain which you own, count the rounds in your flush magazine — eleven means the standard gun, fifteen means the XL.
The magazine is the quickest tell. A standard Reflex ships with eleven and fifteen-round magazines, while the XL ships with fifteen and eighteen, so the flush-fit magazine in your gun answers it immediately. If you have a mixed set, go by the shorter magazine, because that is the one sized flush to your frame. Failing that, send us a photo from the side and we will identify it before pressing anything.
Not at all. The fifteen-round body on a standard Reflex extends downward past the base of the grip, well clear of every surface the Kydex contacts, so the pistol shell is unaffected by which magazine is in it. The spare carrier is the part that has to match, since a moulded pouch grips the magazine body itself, and eleven, fifteen and eighteen-round bodies are three different lengths. Tell us which one you carry as a spare.
Yes, but stay in the compact bodies. The rail on a micro frame is short, so a full-size light overhangs the muzzle and adds length in the dimension you were trying to minimise. The Streamlight TLR-7 Sub is the usual choice, the TLR-6 clamps on where rail space runs out, and the TLR-8 Sub adds a laser. Name the exact model when you order and we will confirm it clears the trigger guard properly before the shell is pressed.
We do. The MRD versions leave the factory already milled for a micro optic, and we open the top of the shell far enough for a shielded housing to travel through it without contact. Your line does not change because of it — an MRD Reflex is still the Reflex pattern. Do flag tall irons if you have fitted them to co-witness through the window, because those rise above the housing and the cut has to go deeper again.
