Sixty-plus years into production, the 92 is still being revised, and the revisions never came with a clean break in the naming. The result is a pistol that answers to two badges and arrives on our bench as eight distinct patterns.

You do not need a caliper to work out which one you have. Two things settle it: look under the front of the frame, then look at the lever above your grip.

One gap worth knowing before you order. Our 92 FS line is the railed frame. If the underside of yours is smooth — an older 92FS, or an original service M9 — that pattern is not currently a selectable option, and you should talk to us first rather than choosing the closest-looking line. We would rather tell you honestly than press a shell that sits loose at the muzzle.

The rule that covers nearly every case: anything that alters the shape between the trigger guard and the muzzle needs its own tooling. Changes below the grip line almost never do.

A Rail Opens the Whole Light List

Unlike a micro-compact, where light choice is a compromise, a railed 92 has room for anything. There is no adapter needed and no sub-compact body to hunt down — bolt on a full-size unit and the shell gets pressed around it. From our 53 light and laser options, these all suit a service-size Beretta:

  • Streamlight TLR-1 and TLR-1 HL-X, the most common pick on a duty-size frame
  • SureFire X300U A and B, where the light doubles as an index for the support hand
  • Olight PL-2 Pro and PL-3, plus the Modlite PL350 for higher output
  • Streamlight TLR-2 or a Viridian X5L when a laser matters alongside the light

Optics. The 92X RDO and M9A4 leave the factory with a milled slide and a removable plate, so a shielded micro dot mounts directly and our shells are cut with a channel that clears it. Taller iron sights fitted to co-witness through the window stand higher again — flag those separately, because they need more clearance than the optic body does.

The three that get cross-shopped, and a useful illustration of why the badge alone never settles the question. Note that the Centurion shortens the slide while keeping the grip, so it is not a compact in the way the word normally implies.

Shortening the slide does not shrink the gun. A Centurion still fills a full-size grip and still needs a belt that can carry it, but its muzzle stops noticeably earlier, and that alone rules out sharing a shell with a standard 92. Whichever you carry, choose the line that names it — and for the PX4, APX and Cheetah side of the range, the Beretta holster page covers those platforms.

Eight Lines, Eight Molds

A shelf-stock maker carries one Beretta 92 shell and lets tolerance absorb the rest of the family. That works right up until the rail, the lever or the slide length is the thing that differs. Cutting after the order removes the compromise:

  • A railed frame and a smooth one are never treated as the same gun, because the slotted section adds width at the point the shell closes hardest.
  • The lever on the slide is worked around deliberately, so no part of the shell can press against it and shift it while the pistol is holstered.
  • Threaded muzzles and optic plates are declared up front and pressed in, rather than being handled by leaving slack everywhere and hoping it covers them.

Beretta 92 Holster Questions

Start with the underside of the frame, forward of the trigger guard. Square notches cut into that section mean you have a railed gun, which is what our 92 FS Rail and 92A1 lines cover. Then look at the rear of the slide: a lever there is the traditional arrangement, while a bare slide with a thumb safety down on the frame means you are holding the 92XI SAO. Anything marked M9A1, M9A3 or M9A4 has its own line. If it is still unclear, send us a photo from the side and we will name it for you.
Only if the lines match. They descend from the same design, but the two branches were revised on separate schedules and the differences landed in places Kydex cares about — rails, grip thickness and barrel arrangements all moved at different times. We tool the 92 lines and the M9A1, M9A3 and M9A4 independently and do not treat them as one shell with extra clearance. Order the marking that is actually stamped on your slide.
Get in touch before ordering, because that specific frame is not currently one of the choices in our model list — the 92 FS line we offer is the railed version. We are not going to sell you the nearest-looking option and hope, since a shell built around a wider railed dust cover will sit loose on a smooth frame and retention comes from exactly that area. Contact us with what you have and we will tell you honestly whether we can press it and what that would involve.
The two are close dimensionally, but they behave differently and we build with that in mind. On a standard 92 the slide-mounted lever holds its position once you move it; on a G model it decocks and immediately returns under spring pressure. Either way it is a moving part sitting on the slide, so the shell is shaped never to bear against it. Our Centurion line is a G model, and it also carries a shorter slide, which is the bigger fitment factor of the two.
Ask us first rather than assuming. The PT92 grew out of the same design and looks close enough at a glance to cause confusion, but it puts its safety on the frame rather than the slide and the two have drifted apart in detail over the years. It is not currently a line in our selector. Tell us the exact model and generation you own and we will confirm what we can press before you commit to an order.
No. A 15 or 20-round body extends below the grip, well clear of every surface the shell touches, so one holster covers whatever you feed it. The magazine carrier is a different matter, since a moulded pouch only holds the body it was pressed around and the longer bodies are noticeably different. Tell us at checkout which magazine you actually carry as your spare and that is the one we cut for.
The 92X RDO and the M9A4. Both use a slide milled with a removable plate that a micro red dot bolts onto, and our shells for those two lines are cut with a channel that clears a shielded optic. If you have also gone to suppressor-height irons so you can pick up the sights through the dot window, mention it separately when you order, because those sit higher than the optic housing itself and the channel needs opening further to clear them.
A single mag pouch is $30, the Chronos OWB paddle is $60, and the two-tone Theseus that mounts inside or outside the waistband is $85. Adding a weapon light is $20 on top, and needs a railed frame. Everything is made after you order, so allow 10 to 14 business days. If you need a line we have never pressed before, a mold has to be built and tested first, and that falls outside the normal turnaround.
